Summary Computer forensics is the systematic inspection and analysis of a computer or other digital system for criminal investigation and misuse. A computer forensics professional needs to have a good grasp of technical and legal issues, and be able to apply those skills to practical investigation and report findings in a clear manner to a non-technical audience.
Course Information The BSc (Hons) Forensic Computing degree is a new degree designed to produce graduates with broad technical skills, knowledge and expertise in digital data recovery, preservation, analysis and the provision of evidence for legal or commercial use. The law theme in this course is run jointly with Birmingham City University’s School of Law.
Course Aims The course aims to equip you with knowledge and skills in the understanding and application of computer forensics, through the study of the following specialist themes and topics:
• IT System Forensics: Application development, operating systems, computer and network forensic investigation, data analysis and recovery, cryptography, IT surveillance, intrusion detection.
• Security and Digital Evidence: Introduction to electronics, error control, forensics for mobile devices, for example, satellite navigation systems, game consoles, portable multimedia players and mobile phones.
• Information Technology Law: The English legal system, handling and preserving evidence, legislation and law reports, courtroom skills, expert witness skills.
• Computer Networking: Computer networks, LANs, WANs, Network design and administration, network security.
• Business Management: Management skills, professional reporting, research skills, presentation skills, personal ethics, organisational ethics.
Prospects Due to the ever-increasing prevalence of Information and Communication Technologies in industrial, commercial and social sectors of society, there is an increasing need for IT professionals trained in investigative skills. This problem has been continually highlighted in surveys conducted by professional IT bodies (IET, BCS and eSkills) and IT related trade publications.

Requirements Applicants will be expected to have successfully completed at least one of the following or an equivalent qualification:
• Five GCSEs/GCEs with at least two GCE ‘A2’ levels, or an AVCE double award. Maths, English Language and a Science subject to at least GCSE Grade C. • An Edexcel National Certificate/Diploma in Engineering with a significant Merit profile. Maths, English Language and a Science subject to at least GCSE Grade C. • A Degree Foundation Certificate, Access to HE Qualification, or equivalent, in a relevant subject.
A typical tariff point offer is 220 to 240 with AS qualifications used towards the tariff where appropriate.
Mature applicants who are able to demonstrate proficiency in Mathematics and written English will be considered for entry at Foundation Level.
